Eugene Porter form the sinews of Kappa and are the frame work upon which to build a structure that shall benefit and ennoble the world or that shall crumble into worthless dust just as the boys and the builders shall choose.

Modesty seems to have prevented the writing of anything in these articles concerning one of the most prominent citizens of this village.

EUGENE STONE

This gentleman is more in demand in Kappa than any other man. He is a son of Ira C. Stone mentioned above. His father is, as was not mentioned, a cousin of ex-President Arthur and also a cousin of Melville E. Stone, editor of the Chicago Daily News. The young man has a splendid education, is a talented writer as the Journal columns testify from time to time. He is extremely popular throughout our county and especially so with the residents in the vicinity of Kappa. He is sort of advisor general and letter writer in chief. If any of the citizens there want information and accommodation, or advice, they "go to Eugene." Talk about offices, why he is the notary public, police magistrate, president of board of highway commissioners, and also of township board of trustees, deputy postmaster, clerk of cemetery trustees, clerk of school directors and in fact everything else where there is lots of work and no pay. As he is a man of positive convictions he has a few enemies, but last spring in a contest for the supervisorship of our township he was defeated by popular John Tyler, only eleven votes. This testifies as to his standing here. By the way, it comes to our ears that his name will be presented to the convention that will name one of our legislators. He has hosts of warm friends without regard to politics who would like to have him represent them in this capacity next winter. That he would make a creditable representative none of his acquaintances can doubt and for which the Journal can vouch.
