Marten and her son Robert continued the business until April 1967, when they sold out. John Peavler of Bloomington, opened a store under the name of Greg's Men's Wear in July, 1967 but returned to Bloomington after about a year.
Miss Margaret Henning is proprietor of Henning's Clothing, which carries both men and women's apparel. Located at 37 West Front St., it began operation November 1, 1969.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hartman operated Hartman's Ready-to-Wear at 51 West Front Street from February 2, 1958 to November, 1968, when they closed out their stock. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Fussner opened a Ward's Catalog Store in the building, and in March, 1974 sold the business to Joseph Higgins.
Tom O'Leary returned to El Paso in 1946 after three years military duty and resumed operation of a Gamble store, handling men's and boy's clothing in the Foltz building on East Front Street. In 1949, he moved to 43 West Front Street where he continued until May, 1973, when he closed out the business and retired after 33 years in business in El Paso. The building was purchased in 1974 by Arthur Lee, and Mrs. Lee plans to open a dress shop for women and girls. She will also stock fabrics, patterns, accessories, cosmetics and gift items. The shop will be known as Coco's World.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schramm came from Gridley in 1933 and opened a shoe store and repair shop at 41 East Front Street. Mr. Schramm died in 1958. Mrs. Schramm discontinued the repair work and gradually added women's clothing and accessories to her stock. Fred Underwood, who had been in the shoe business for 17 years, purchased the business January 28, 1974, and is continuing the business under the Schramm name.
Mrs. James Kauth opened a ceramic shop in the basement of her home at 474 West First Street in the spring of 1970 under the name of Vineta's Ceramics. She provides instructions as well as supplies or finished products.
Mrs. Lyle Stitt, who is an avid crafter, entertains groups with similar interests in the basement workshop of her home at 555 West Fourth Street. A wide variety of completed articles and materials are available for purchase. She gives demonstrations to groups by appointment only, from early fall to spring.
In 1940, Robert G. Pierce opened a grocery store at 111 West Front Street, in a building which had been vacant for three years. He later added a furniture store adjoining it on the west, which he operated until September, 1946, when he moved it to 137 West Front Street. In 1947, Pearl Nohren purchased the grocery business, and Mr. Pierce devoted his entire time to the furniture store.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Faulk began a drapery and upholstery business in a shop on Elm Street, later moving to West Front Street, then to 37 East Front. August 10, 1970, they purchased the Pierce
