1954-1974

POST OFFICE – For a number of years, the possibility of a new post office was discussed by individuals and various civic groups. In 1959, a postal department representative investigated several possible sites, none of which were generally approved by El Pasoans. After several delays, the Post Office Department reaffirmed its first selection, and a new building was erected at the corner of Summit and West Front Streets. It is of tan brick construction and contains 2,040 square feet of floor space. It was built by a Peoria investor and leased by him to the U. S. Postal Department. It was opened for business October 1, 1964.

Dedication of the new facility was held in the V. F. W. building the afternoon of February 13, 1965. Mayor Dwight Roth welcomed the group and sat down near the platform to listen to a history of the El Paso Post Office. Only a few minutes later, he slumped in his chair, taken to an anteroom and a doctor in the audience ministered to him, but death occurred in a few minutes.
