Mackinaw Bridge, south of Kappa, was built in 1910-1911. There was a delay in constructing the approach on south end in McLean County. During this time Bloomington wholesale merchants made regular trips to call on El Paso merchants. On one such trip George R. Curtis, editor of El Paso Journal, passed out pictures of the bridge without an approach to the merchants, as they boarded the train for home. For some reason, work began the next day on the McLean County approach of the bridge.
