ceremony for several of the early citizens. In '56 he removed to Iowa and afterwards died there.

William Hall, a brother of Hiram Hall, kept a lumber yard here in '56 and '57. In '57 he moved away and now lives at Prairie Center, Ill.

Reuben Decker and John and Steve Radcliff were old settlers. They were very honest men but thought more of dancing, hunting and drinking than anything else.

William North is one of our most respected citizens. He was born March 30, 1824 in the parish of Tydd, St. Mary, Lincolnshire, England. In 1845 he came to Lawrenceburg, Ind. In May 1846 he volunteered to serve 12 years in the Mexican War. He was in the battle of Buena Vista, Feb. 22 and 23, 1847. He returned to England, where he was married on Dec. 28, 1847. He came to this place and settled at his present home in '55, where he has ever since resided. By hard work, economy and good management, Mr. North has accumulated a large property. For many years he has been prominent in religious and temperance work and is a licesed preacher of the M. E. Church. He has preached hundreds of sermons and conducted many meetings all around the county. For this work he has never asked or received a cent, but has probably paid out hundreds of dollars for the support of churches, etc. He has an estimable family and is highly respected by all.

Michael Carroll was born in Ireland and came to America in '53, and to this place in '56. He crossed the Niagara suspension bridge on the first train that ever crossed that structure. For many years he was prominent in Kappa affairs -- is now a grain buyer at El Paso.

B. K. Ore came from New Jersey to Illinois in '55. He has twice moved back to New Jersey but has always concluded that Illinois is good enough for him. In '62 he entered the army and has now the enjoyment of a small pension, from the government.

Sam Barsby and wife came from England in 1853. Mrs. Barsby was born in England in 1819. Mr. Barsby was born several years later, a soldier under the Duke of Wellington, and accompanied the Duke in his campaigns through Spain and Portugal. After leaving the English army he was a member of the police force there for some years. Upon
