Col. Cook's eldest son is Frank L. Cook, one of the best known of the early Kappa boys and one among the first teachers of the Kappa schools. He is now a prominent lawyer at Paxton, Illinois, and is Prosecuting Attorney of Ford County. John W. Cook is the second son and is equally well known at Kappa. Twenty-nine years ago he worked on a farm for Esquire Moore, now of El Paso. In '61 he entered Normal School, graduating in '64 or '65. He is now professor of mathematics at the Illinois State Normal University and is in great request as a lecturer on educational and other topics. Adele Cook, the eldest daughter, is the wife of Judge Alfred Sample of Paxton, Illinois. Ida Louisa Cook, the youngest daughter, is the wife of Frank Gove, Esq., who is a civil engineer, surveyor and school teacher. Mrs. Jennie McClelan is the adopted daughter of Col. and Mrs. Cook, and is the wife of Wm. McClelan of El Paso. Mrs. Joann H. Cook, widow of Col. Cook, and sister of Hiram Hall, of Kappa, lives at Normal, contentedly, happily, and prosperously.

Joseph Potter came from Indiana about 1855, and with his wife kept a boarding house at Kappa. After his death his widow (who is a sister of Joseph Grant, Caleb Horn and Mrs. Harper) married George Cox. Upon his death she married Rev. Mueller of Chicago, and is again a widow. She resides in Kansas.

John E. Harrison was another old settler. He came from Philadelphia, and about '52 or '53 carried the mail on horseback from Roxan, and afterwards from Kappa to Spring Bay and return. The last known of him he was living in Salina, Kans.

Frederick Niergarth, one of the first storekeepers and the second postmaster at Kappa was born in Germany, came to the west from Buffalo, N.Y., and for a time kept store at Slabtown, in this county. He is now proprietor of a large boot and shoe store in Bloomington.

James Jaynes, born in Otsego County, N.Y., on July 28, 1828, came to Illinois in '52, after spending one year at Oneida. In the employ of H. D. Cook he came to Kappa in
